CocoaTrust Nigeria — Digital Infrastructure for a Traceable Cocoa Sector

CocoaTrust connects farmer registration, farm mapping, compliance evidence and physical cocoa traceability through reusable digital records.

Designed for field implementation and future interoperability, the platform can support Nigerian cocoa programmes seeking better traceability, agricultural information and measurable farmer outcomes.

A practical first mile

Reliable records make the supply chain easier to understand.

Nigeria’s published cocoa-sector priorities include coordination, traceability, transparency, quality and capacity building. CocoaTrust offers an independent operational record layer that may support participating programmes; it is not a national registry or a substitute for public systems.

What CocoaTrust can support

One connected record, with clear boundaries.

01

Trusted first-mile records

Register farmers and farms with consent, provenance and programme context, then maintain updates as the record changes.

02

Farm mapping and evidence

Keep mapped boundaries, version history and supporting information connected to the relevant farm for authorised review.

03

Physical traceability

Link deliveries to contributing farms and preserve recorded origin as cocoa is aggregated into lots and custody events.

04

Research-to-field opportunities

A future pilot could connect authorised seedling, extension and agronomy records to existing farmer and farm records. These workflows are not yet implemented.

05

Farmer and programme outcomes

Reusable records can help participating programmes report reach, information gaps and recorded activity. Any service, market or finance benefit depends on separate programme arrangements.

06

Interoperability by agreement

CocoaTrust is designed to exchange authorised information when data standards, legal purposes and technical access are agreed with relevant parties.

The existing record chain

From farmer and farm to a recorded cocoa lot.

The Nigeria synthetic demonstration shows the existing first-mile and physical traceability model. It does not include fabricated research results, certificates or institutional participation.

Potential areas of alignment

Built to complement institutional work.

Sector coordination and traceability

NCMC’s published mandate describes coordination, monitoring and development of cocoa-sector traceability. CocoaTrust could contribute programme records and authorised exports if the relevant standards, access and governance are agreed.

Research and extension

CRIN describes research across cocoa and other mandate crops, alongside dissemination through extension and capacity building. Future field workflows could record activities linked to research programmes, subject to technical and institutional validation.

CocoaTrust is an independent initiative. References to Nigerian public institutions describe potential policy or technical alignment and do not imply endorsement or partnership.

A proposal, not a commitment

Start with a bounded, farmer-centred field pilot.

Potential participants, locations, data purposes, governance and evaluation measures must be agreed before any real-data pilot. Nigeria is the intended first operational market; Ghana remains a supported CocoaTrust programme.
