Digital infrastructure for trusted cocoa supply chains

Know the farmer.
Know the farm.
Trace the cocoa.

A cocoa farmer and the cocoa journey from a mapped farm through digital records, transport and aggregation to global export.

CocoaTrust creates a trusted first-mile record connecting farmers, mapped farms, compliance evidence and physical cocoa deliveries.

It gives programmes, cooperatives and downstream partners the visibility they need to trace cocoa back to its origin and prepare reliable evidence for regulatory and sustainability requirements.

Designed for smallholder cocoa supply chains in West Africa — starting with Nigeria and Ghana.

The problem

Cocoa supply chains still lose visibility at the first mile.

A single cocoa farmer may be registered, surveyed and mapped repeatedly by NGOs, cooperatives, traders, certification schemes and government programmes.

Yet the information is often fragmented across spreadsheets, applications and closed systems.

When cocoa is delivered and aggregated, it becomes increasingly difficult to answer basic questions reliably:

  • Who produced it?
  • Which farm did it come from?
  • Is the farm mapped?
  • What evidence exists?
  • Where did the cocoa go?

01

Fragmented farmer data

Farmer identities, farm polygons and evidence are repeatedly collected by different actors.

02

Broken traceability

Physical cocoa moves through the supply chain while origin information is often separated from the commodity.

03

Growing compliance burden

EUDR and other requirements require more reliable geolocation, provenance and supporting evidence.

The CocoaTrust approach

One trusted record from farm to market.

CocoaTrust connects information collected in the field with the physical movement of cocoa.

Each participating farmer and farm has a persistent Cocoa Passport containing the information, provenance and evidence needed to support downstream due diligence.

Information is captured once, maintained with provenance, and shared only through authorised workflows.

Programme visibility

See what is happening across the programme.

CocoaTrust turns field activity into programme-level visibility.

Managers can see which farmers are registered, which farms are mapped, where information is incomplete, which records require review, and how much cocoa is entering the traceable supply chain.

Physical traceability

Follow cocoa back to the farm it came from.

CocoaTrust links physical cocoa deliveries to the farmer and mapped farm that produced them.

As cocoa is aggregated, split, moved and received, the system preserves its recorded origin and custody history.

From a lot, CocoaTrust can trace backwards to contributing deliveries, farmers, farms and historic farm boundaries. From a farm, it can trace forward to the deliveries and downstream lots that contain its cocoa.

Evidence & readiness

Build the evidence needed for downstream due diligence.

CocoaTrust structures first-mile information to support regulatory and sustainability due diligence. For EUDR, this includes farm geolocation, production information, supplier provenance, evidence records and deforestation-assessment status.

CocoaTrust shows what information exists, what is missing and what requires human review — without presenting itself as a legal certification authority.

Geolocation

Persistent farm polygons with mapping provenance and boundary history.

Evidence

Documents, field observations and reviewer decisions linked to the relevant farmer or farm.

Readiness

Clear status showing missing information, evidence requirements and reassessment needs.

The Cocoa Passport

The reusable first-mile record.

A Cocoa Passport brings together the farmer, mapped farms, production information, consent, evidence, compliance assessments and downstream traceability in one durable record.

Instead of recreating the same information for each programme or buyer, authorised systems can work from the same underlying record.

Capture once. Maintain provenance. Use through authorised workflows.

Interoperability

Built to connect — not replace.

CocoaTrust is not intended to replace national traceability systems, certification platforms or buyer systems.

It is designed as a neutral implementation and interoperability layer that helps field programmes collect, maintain and exchange high-quality first-mile data.

Nigeria

Designed for a more distributed value chain where programmes, cooperatives and aggregators need consistent farmer, farm and traceability records.

Ghana

Designed to complement national traceability infrastructure and support programme-level data collection and interoperability.

Field ready

Built for the places where cocoa is actually produced.

Field work cannot depend on perfect connectivity.

CocoaTrust is mobile-first and supports offline capture of farmer registration, consent, farms, boundaries and deliveries.

Records synchronise safely when connectivity returns.

For implementation partners

Turn existing cocoa programmes into trusted digital infrastructure.

NGOs and implementation partners bring farmer relationships, field teams and value-chain expertise. CocoaTrust provides the digital infrastructure for structured records, traceability, evidence and interoperability.
